Principles of spinning is a core course in polymer materials and textile engineering. It primarily explores the theoretical principles and processing technologies involved in transforming solid polymers into continuous fibers through rheological behavior and phase transitions. The core curriculum covers three major spinning techniques: melt spinning, where polymers are heated above their melting point, extruded through a spinneret, and solidified by cooling; wet spinning, which dissolves polymers in a solvent and precipitates them in a coagulation bath; and dry spinning, which solidifies the fiber by evaporating the solvent with hot air. Beyond the forming processes, the course delves into polymer rheology, fluid behavior inside the spinneret, and subsequent drawing and heat-setting stages. These post-treatments guide polymer chains to crystallize and align along the fiber axis, which is critical in determining the final mechanical strength and physical properties of the fibers. The course aims to integrate forming theories with industrial practices, laying a solid foundation for students to develop functional and high-performance fiber materials.
