This course centers on international current affairs and aims to develop students’ ability to comprehend, respond to, analyze, and articulate ideas in spoken English interaction. Through class discussion, small-group dialogue, issue-based responses, position statements, and short oral presentations, students will learn to approach international events from multiple perspectives, organize information, identify viewpoints, and participate in discussion in clear and logical English. The course also emphasizes the development of critical thinking and global awareness in order to strengthen students’ English communication skills in the context of global issues. Learning objectives 1. Explain an international story clearly: Give a brief English account of what happened and why it matters, using relevant evidence. 2. Judge how a story is supported and framed: Check a source beyond its own website, compare two accounts, and explain what remains uncertain. 3. Sustain a discussion in English: Ask questions, respond to a classmate’s idea, and explain a position with evidence.

Students will be strongly discouraged from using generative AI as a shortcut for language production, critical thinking, and independent projects. AI should never become a substitute for your own voice or judgment. This course is a place to practice discovering ideas and making choices for yourself, which matters more than quickly generating smooth (and ultimately lifeless) English.
