This course aims to provide pre-service engineering students and professionals with the adequate skills of the English language and communicative competence to facilitate their current academic and future career pursuits. Students are encouraged to utilize their domain expertise to participate in professional communication in English. Centered on the training of professional use of the English language, the ESAP curriculum as the crux of a highly-integrated work of domain knowledge and the English learning development embodies the indispensable credentials required for a global profession. This is an ESAP course at the intermediate level (CEFR B1). It is built around Capstone—Intro, the textbook designated for the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and covers four units — big data, artificial intelligence, the history of robotics, and hackers and internet security — through which students become familiar with the vocabulary, sentence patterns, and forms of explanation used in electrical engineering and computer science. All materials, handouts, and slides are in English, and the instructor uses English for at least 80% of class time, switching to Chinese only for important course regulations or when comprehension breaks down. The units are taught in two-week blocks: the first week works through the text and its vocabulary, the second turns to application and output. The four units move from the basic concepts of data and computation toward the development of robotics and the problems of information security, so that by the end of the term students can read English documentation in the field and explain a technical concept in English. The course also uses the Ministry of Education's Cool English platform and Active Reading Adventure, an interactive reading site built by the instructor, for in-class reading activities and independent practice. Four workshops provide the scaffolding. The goal-setting workshop in Week 2 helps students plan their work for the term. The test-prepar

2%。 Writing and speaking tasks are assessed with a shared rubric of five dimensions across four levels. For writing, the dimensions are content and task, organization and coherence, language use, genre appropriacy, and revision and development. For speaking, they are content and task, organization and coherence, language use, delivery and fluency, and interaction and response. The Speaking component consists of three individual speaking tasks scheduled to follow the units; the requirements and assessment focus of each are announced at the start of the unit. The poster presentation takes place in Weeks 15 and 16 and is assessed with the same speaking rubric. The Writing component consists of two in-class writing tasks, each worth 5%, both completed independently during class; students may use generative AI beforehand to gather ideas and outline, but the in-class draft must be their own. Both tasks are resubmitted as revisions accompanied by the original draft, and the revision and development dimension is scored on the difference between the two. Quizzes cover the vocabulary and reading content of each unit. In-Class Activities cover the weekly worksheets and classroom activities, including the Week 17 interview questionnaire and the Week 18 worksheet, each worth 2% of the final grade.
