Compared to high culture subjects like science, economics, and literature, popular culture (movies, tv shows, pop songs) may seem less important. But pop culture is a significant part of education and general knowledge, especially for second-language students who want to be citizens of the world, interacting with foreigners and traveling around the world. It is important for ESL students to know about general culture and be comfortable talking about topics that adults like to talk about, outside of research labs and business meeting rooms. In this class students will develop their critical thinking and will practice their basic English skills and vocabulary by reading news articles about popular culture and academic essays that take popular culture seriously; as well as, of course, by studying closely a variety of pop cultural texts (such as movies, tv shows, and pop songs).
