If ESL students are going to study one Western author, then that author should be Shakespeare. He is one of the few writers who has been both culturally significant and also popular in virtually every decade since his death. In the twenty-first century, knowing something about Shakespeare is still a sign that a person is well-educated; that is true not just of Westerners, but of citizens of the world (because Shakespeare is a part of world culture, not just British or Western culture). So, in addition to providing students some basic background on Shakespeare and his times, this class will examine closely some of the most famous passages from some of the most well-known plays of Shakespeare (for example, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream). We will consider Shakespeare’s place in our culture today, both as a symbol of high culture and as a frequent source of material for popular culture (movies, tv, pop music).
