課程大綱

一、教學目標 本課程旨在讓學生具備國際新聞編譯之相關知識，並透過實務演練培養新聞編譯之能力。課程內容主要含括(一)國際新聞編譯之介紹（如新聞編譯現況、製作流程、專業條件與譯者相關知能）；（二）新聞編譯之策略與技巧（如刪除、重組、整合新聞訊息）；（三）新聞編譯之模擬與實務練習。 本課程提供閱讀新聞英語的練習機會，藉著閱讀報紙、雜誌英文新聞報導、評論、專欄、社論等，了解其中新聞字彙、文體，訓練閱讀新聞。 促使學生透過媒體識讀教學過程、瞭解新聞編採實務、國際現勢、配合原本的英文能力利基，強化國際觀，落實並活用英文。 本課程重要目標並包含著重加強應用英文系學生對國際新聞編譯實務的能力，培養學生敏銳的觀察力及組織力、並訓練學生對國際時事的新聞陳述與課堂討論，達到不同觀點的看法。有系統引導學生閱讀國際新聞，述說新國際聞編譯之寫作方式與要點，以及編譯技巧，培養未來可能於新聞職場服務的專業能力。 I. Teaching Objectives This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the theories, principles, and practices of international news translation and editing, while cultivating their professional competencies through practical training and experiential learning. Through a systematic integration of conceptual instruction and applied exercises, students will develop essential skills in news translation, information processing, and cross-cultural communication within the context of international journalism. The course content encompasses three major areas. First, it introduces the fundamental concepts and contemporary practices of international news translation and editing, including the current landscape of the news translation industry, news production procedures, professional requirements, and the knowledge base and competencies expected of translators and editors. Second, the course explores strategies and techniques employed in news translation and editing, such as information omission, restructuring, adaptation, and integration, with particular emphasis on the effective organization and presentation of news information across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Third, simulation-based activities and practical exercises are incorporated to familiarize students with authentic news translation and editing processes and to enhance their practical abilities. In addition, the course provides opportunities for students to develop proficiency in reading journalistic English through exposure to English-language newspapers, magazines, news reports, commentaries, columns, and editorials. By engaging with diverse forms of journalistic discourse, students will acquire familiarity with news-related vocabulary, stylistic conventions, and textual structures, thereby strengthening their reading comprehension and analytical skills in journalistic contexts. The course further incorporates media literacy education as a pedagogical framework to help students understand the practical operations of news gathering, reporting, and editorial decision-making, while deepening their awareness of international affairs and contemporary global issues. Building upon students’ existing English-language competencies, the course seeks to broaden their global perspectives and intercultural understanding while enhancing the practical application of English in professional and international contexts. Another major objective of this course is to strengthen Applied English students’ professional competencies in international news translation and editing. Emphasis is placed on cultivating students’ observational sensitivity, organizational abilities, and critical thinking skills. Students will also be encouraged to engage in news presentations and classroom discussions concerning international current events, enabling them to examine issues from multiple perspectives. Through systematic guidance in reading international news, understanding journalistic writing conventions, and applying translation and editing techniques, students will develop the professional expertise and practical capabilities necessary for future careers in journalism, international communication, and related fields.

Assessment and Evaluation Criteria Student performance in this course will be assessed through a combination of continuous coursework, classroom engagement, examinations, and project-based learning activities. The evaluation framework is designed to measure students’ academic achievement, critical thinking abilities, participation in collaborative learning, and practical competencies in international news translation and editing. Weekly Assignments and Attendance (15%) Students are expected to complete assigned weekly coursework and maintain regular attendance. This component evaluates students’ consistency in learning engagement, preparation, and active participation throughout the semester. Class Participation, Discussion, and Inquiry (20%) Assessment will be based on students’ active involvement in classroom activities, including participation in discussions, contribution of ideas, critical questioning, and engagement in collaborative learning processes. Midterm Examination (20%) The midterm examination is intended to assess students’ understanding of the theoretical concepts, analytical frameworks, and practical techniques introduced during the first half of the course. Final Project Presentation (45%) Students will complete a final group project designed to demonstrate their ability to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application.
