Cognitive Pragmatics in Media Communication is a graduate course on the cognitive and pragmatic processes involved in the production and interpretation of media discourse. The course focuses on how speakers and writers manage attention, perspective, inference, and contextual assumptions, and how these processes are linguistically realized through lexical choice, metaphor, framing, presupposition, and discourse organization. Drawing on examples from news, advertising, political communication, and social media, the course examines how particular formulations make some interpretations more accessible than others and how audiences recover meanings that are not explicitly encoded. It also addresses persuasion, bias, and ideological positioning as consequences of these interpretive processes rather than as properties of particular words or expressions. These issues are explored through discussion, case studies, and the close analysis of authentic media discourse.
