In high culture – the collection of the world’s greatest artists and writers – there is no more important English writer than Shakespeare. Educated people – not just in the West, but all over the world – read and study Shakespeare. But one reason that Shakespeare remains today not only famous but popular is that his stories and characters have influenced other artists associated with both high and low culture – painters, writers, poets, and classical composers regarded as great artists themselves; and film makers, tv show writers, comic book artists, and pop song lyricists whose fame comes from the world of popular culture. This class will introduce students to some of the most important stories, characters, quotations in Shakespeare’s original plays – but with an eye toward how those works have been adapted and re-imagined by other artists and in popular culture (in the West and in Asia), as modern staged plays but also as new works in different genres (movies, musicals, pop songs, anime).
