This course centers on “NTUT People and Urban Memory” and is closely aligned with the University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative, which emphasizes local engagement, social participation, and the practical application of knowledge. Starting from the campus of National Taipei University of Technology, students will explore surrounding communities and industrial-cultural sites to understand the relationship between the university’s development and the transformation of Taipei City. Key learning sites include the NTUT campus, Jianguo Brewery, the former Guanghua Bridge site, Guanghua Digital Plaza, the Bade Road commercial district, and nearby communities. These places embody multiple layers of educational development, industrial transformation, commercial change, and local everyday life, making them important sites for USR-related practices in cultural preservation, community engagement, and sustainable development. USR-related themes are integrated into the course through field research, interviews, historical data collection, literary journalism, and GIS story mapping. Rather than learning only in the classroom, students will enter local communities and interact with alumni, faculty members, retired staff, residents, shop owners, business operators, and local cultural and historical practitioners. Through their life stories and local memories, students will examine the long-term connections among NTUT, surrounding industries, communities, and urban spaces, while also addressing issues such as urban renewal, industrial transformation, cultural heritage preservation, and local identity. The oral histories, photographs, documents, and geographic information collected during the course will be transformed into feature stories and digital GIS story maps, creating outcomes that combine humanistic narratives with spatial information. Through this learning process, students will connect academic knowledge with real-world social issues, while developing skills in field observation, interviewing, narrative writing, digital applications, and social engagement. The course also contributes to the documentation of local cultural resources, strengthens interaction between the university and surrounding communities, and serves as an important educational practice linking the USR initiative with the university, industry, community, and urban memory.
