This course examines how language produces social meaning. Rather than treating language as a neutral system, it focuses on how variation, style, and indexicality are used to construct identity, stance, and social relations. The course draws on both classic studies and contemporary case analyses to explore how language operates in real interaction across different contexts. Students will learn to analyze how linguistic forms index social meanings and how language use reflects and shapes identity, positioning, and power.
