課程大綱

n the second semester, apart from further refining students' writing skills (in the modes of classification and extended definition), the course will also introduce key theoretical approaches in literary and cultural studies to help students establish their arguments and methodologies of their senior projects. Students will read excerpts from original theoretical texts and critical essays that involve theoretical frameworks and write a full research paper at the end of the semester.

Week 1: Introduction to the course and reviewing the common errors/defects in the 2 essays written in last semester Week 2-3: Classification essay: exercise Week 3-4: Extended definition: exercise Week 5-6: Introduction to theories, methods of critical reading Week 7: Introduction to psychoanalysis Week 8: Exercise: psychoanalytical readings of "The Black Cat" Week 9: Exercise: psychoanalytical readings of "The Garden of Love" Week 10: Gender studies: introduction to feminism Week 11: Film viewing: Thelma & Louise Week 12: Exercise: feminist readings of Thelma & Louise Week 13: Gender studies: introduction to queer theory Week 14: Film viewing: The Birdcage Week 15: Exercise: queer readings of The Birdcage Week 16: Introduction to postcolonial studies: Orientalism, the subaltern Week 17: Film viewing: M. 評量方式

Two essays: 70% Participation (including assignments): 30%
