1. Every cultural group has stories that have been passed down through generations. Some reflect universal human themes, while others display unique cultural characteristics. In foreign language teaching, such stories can be used to broaden global perspectives, explore linguistic and cultural differences, and develop well-rounded English language skills. How can teachers incorporate these stories into their teaching? This is the central question that this course aims to explore. 2. The course materials are chosen with two main purposes: (1) To understand popular English novels (or short stories) and their film adaptations, analyzing how these stories relate to other well-known tales from around the world. The goal is to enhance graduate students’ language proficiency and intercultural competence. (2) To explore ways of transforming the content of these popular stories into teaching materials and classroom activities, thereby increasing students’ motivation and effectiveness in learning language and culture. 3. The course will include the following components: (1) The instructor will assign and introduce one popular novel (or series) each week, guiding students through selected excerpts in English and showing key scenes from film adaptations. (2) The instructor will present relevant teaching methods and lead students in practicing materials development and lesson design. (3) Each graduate student will choose a popular novel of their own interest and give two oral presentations: one before the midterm and one before the final exam. Students will present their adapted teaching materials in the written final project.
