This course is designed to develop the student's background for planning and conducting research independently. The nature of the project conducted will vary from student to student, but regardless of the genre of the project, it must result in a written research report. The research project must be conducted by the student individually. It is anticipated that the project will result from: an experiment; a descriptive study using quantitative procedures or qualitative procedures; a case study; a historical study; a cross-cultural study; a theory that offers an alternative interpretation to a current theory or model. By the end of the semester, students will be able to: - Identify and analyze a specific object or text. - Formulate a focused research question appropriate for an undergraduate senior project. - Find existing scholarship related to their research question, summarize relevant sources, place their project in conversation with these texts, and correctly cite, introduce, and explain sources in their writing. - Define and use key concepts and theoretical terms clearly when discussing their object of analysis. - Apply at least one theoretical concept or framework to their object of analysis and demonstrate how that theory helps interpret their object source. - Develop an argument that moves from observation to claim, supported with specific evidence. - Deliver structured peer feedback on classmates’ projects, identifying strengths, questions, and areas for improvement. - Revise their own writing in response to feedback from peers and the advisor in order to strengthen clarity, argumentation, and organization. - Produce a structured draft of a senior project paper that demonstrates sustained analysis and preparation for the final draft and project presentations.
課程進度
Weeks 1–4: Initial Project Meetings Students meet with the advisor to: Discuss their current proposals Identify a manageable object or case study Begin forming a research question Deliverable: Project Proposal Weeks 4–8: Narrowing the Project Students will: Narrow the research question Close read / make observations / note patterns Identify relevant sources Define key terms Deliverable: Observation Notes Students submit structured notes describing what they observe in their chosen object. Weeks 8–12: From Observations to Claims Students begin turning observations into analytical claims. Focus: linking observations to interpretations connecting interpretations to larger arguments drafting sections of the paper Advisor meetings will help students: test whether claims are supported by evidence refine the project structure Deliverable: Working Thesis and Outline Weeks 12–16: Draft Development Students write major sections of the project. Focus: writing analytical paragraphs integrating sources strengthening the argument structure Deliverable: Formal Draft Weeks 16–18: Revision Toward Full Draft Students revise their work with advisor feedback. Focus: clarifying argument structure improving evidence and examples preparing a near-complete draft Deliverable: Revised Formal Draft
評量方式
1. Project Development Process (60%) This component evaluates the research process across the semester, including the following milestones: Project Proposal (Weeks 1–4) Observation Notes (Weeks 4–8) Working Thesis and Outline (Weeks 8–12) Participation in advising meetings Structured peer feedback on classmates’ projects Students are assessed on their ability to: identify a clear object or text for analysis develop a focused research question gather observations and identify patterns define key terms and concepts locate and summarize relevant scholarship place their project in conversation with existing sources provide constructive feedback to peers 2. Formal Draft (20%) Students submit a substantial draft of their senior project during Weeks 12–16. The draft should demonstrate: a clear research question a developing argument supported by observations and examples engagement with relevant scholarly sources explanation and application of at least one theoretical concept an organized structure with analytical paragraphs 3. Revised Formal Draft (20%) During Weeks 16–18, students revise their work based on feedback from: the advisor peers their own reflection on the argument and structure. The revised draft should demonstrate improvement in: clarity of research question and thesis strength of claims integration and explanation of sources organization and structure precision of evidence and examples Evaluation Criteria Across all components, projects will be assessed based on: Research Focus clear research question appropriate scope well-defined object of analysis Use of Sources relevant scholarship identified sources introduced and explained clearly correct citation practices Conceptual Clarity key terms and theoretical ideas defined clearly theory applied meaningfully to the object of analysis Analytical Development observations lead to interpretations interpretations develop into supported claims argument is supported by specific evidence Revision and Engagement responsiveness to feedback participation in advising meetings meaningful improvement between drafts
